Bible in Haiku, Genesis 1

One of my resolutions this year is to make more time to write, but I've been struggling with where to start and what focus to choose. I read a reference somewhere recently (probably Twitter) to converting some big work to haiku, but didn't follow up to find out what that was about. However, I liked the idea, and thought I might take some of the better-known sections of the Bible and see what I can come up with, mainly as an exercise to get my creative juices flowing again. No great promises or grand ambitions, just a starting-point.

So without further excuses, here's my adaptation of Genesis 1:

God said, "Let there be..."
And day by day, it was so.
God called it all "good."

Light/dark, sky/below,
land/water, plants, sun/moon/stars,
and last: animals.

Made in God's image,
humans are given a task:
care for creation.

Six days of labor,
God blessed it all and rested:
Sabbath's gift to all.

In the midst of the whirlwind...

I believe I am a thoughtful, creative, communicative person who has a lot to say and should be able to come up with dozens of blog topics on any given day. And yet, somehow, after hanging out on Facebook and checking my email and now reading dozens of tweets on my Twitter account, I end up feeling inundated with information and unable to produce anything new.

Add to the usual information overload (hardly a new or unique story in the 21st century), this summer I have been the unofficial-interim-lead pastor while our senior pastor is on spiritual renewal leave (while still working half-time at my non-profit job), and I am planning my wedding (with a great deal of assistance from my lovely fiance!) for early October, and I'm feeling fairly starved of intentional time for sabbath and creativity. Yes, I am making sure I get a day off from paid work each week, and there are a few creative tasks in the wedding preparations, but they are constrained by social expectations and deadlines... not the greatest combination!

I long for time
for space uncluttered
for escape and retreat
for solitude
(and loving company)
for purposefulness and play
for harmony and balance
for grounding and center
and I know this requires discipline
but I want it to be easy
to walk away from my messy floor and kitchen table
from my buzzing messages and beeping calendar
from the spend spend spend
and decide important things every day
of planning a threshold day
and simply find that space
that peace
that rest
in the meadow
where time is the sliding of sunbeams
and pressure is a pattern of grass under my skin
and the world speaks in quieter, broader, less pixelated ways
with a hum and a sigh and a song.

Advent again

I never did get my walls painted, but I am fully moved in (have been for a couple months), and love my little house. And now it's Advent again already, and before you know it, we'll be in a new decade.

It has been a year full of change for me, but as far as I can tell right now, it has all been change for the better. I'm looking forward to what 2010 might bring.

Paint shopping

So I'm moving this weekend, and very excited about my new little rental house, even if it is outside the Denver city limits (by 4 blocks). I'm thinking about painting some of the rooms, but as excited as I get about picking out colors, I keep changing my mind about what color I want in which room. Does anyone else have this problem? I went to Home Depot and brought home some idea books from Behr, along with a dozen color chip cards, but the only thing I'm consistently sure of is that I love the set of dishes pictured inside their color trends booklet:

I know, I'm supposed to be looking at the big picture of how the walls and furniture and curtains and everything go together, but instead I find myself coveting these dishes, with their lovely blue background, delicate white flowers, and dark brown wood-like border. If anyone knows where I can buy them, I will cook you a meal and serve it to you in them!
